Dollhouse raises interesting questions for me. A character is given their original personality back in the most recent episode and kills a man, a doctor that, before she went to the dollhouse, force-fed her medication to make her psychotic so he could keep her in his psychiatric facility because he's obsessed with her. After killing the Evil Doctor, she tells Topher that after the five years she's supposed to be a doll, he deletes the day she killed a man from her memory when she's finally released as her original self.

The question it raises in my mind is this: How much must it suck to have to be one of the stewards of reality? Topher knows everything the dolls have to do. And while she won't remember afterward, Topher can never forget.

It must be a terrible burden to know every secret but be unable to talk to anyone about it, because they don't remember.

"Dance, sucka!"

Interesting historical fact discovered on Wikipedia:

In France, the year 1518, a woman named Frau Troffea started dancing in the middle of a street in Strasbourg. She danced constantly for approximately six days. Within a week, 34 other people joined her dancing. Within a month, the number had grown to around 400 people dancing in the town for no discernible reason, and without stopping to rest. Most of these 400 hysterical dancers died of heart attacks, stroke, or exhaustion.

Local physicians believed this dancing was caused by a condition called "hot blood", and rather than prescribing bleeding, they opened two guild halls and grain market, as well as employed musicians to keep people dancing. This more than likely led to most of the deaths.

Read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_Plague_of_1518

Perhaps I'm alone in this, but I'm actually really enjoying this season of Heroes so far. The characters have become human again, rather than simply super-powered heroes. That's what I loved so much about the first season, they struck me as real people dealing with wondrous abilities. Perhaps I have Bryan Fuller's input as a writer to thank for the return of a more human element to the show.

So far, I'm impressed, and only six episodes into the season.

Posits on Dexter:

Quinn, with his anger issues, could be the friend Dexter actually makes at the end of this season. Quinn is, essentially, a good cop with a greedy streak; he steals from dead people. Not worth killing, by Dexter's standards. And Quinn probably wouldn't care how the criminals die, the way Miguel Prada did. He just wants killers dead. So Dexter could accept Quinn's Quirk, and Quinn could potentially cover for Dexter in any number situations, not only if Dexter ever actually slips up, but even "having drinks with Dex" while Dexter is out killing.

/posit

I don't know if I'd call it a real prediction. Just writer's thoughts on developments in the series based solely on episode 2 of season 2, "Remains To Be Seen".

"Hot fucking damn"

So I was watching an episode of Mythbusters, and they had a Jump Master from Bungee.com on the show. I went to the site to check it out, and I discovered possibly the coolest, scariest, most chock full of awesome thing I've ever heard about.

For a little under $10,000, Bungee.com offers the opportunity to bungee jump from the skid of a helicopter...into the caldera of an active volcano. The jumper comes within 700 ft of the bubbling pool of molten lava.

The hefty price tag also covers a day of white water rafting, a day of hot springs activity, meals, drinks, lodging, and a T-shirt. Everything, basically, except travel to and from the location.

Still, all of that is secondary to BUNGEE JUMPING INTO A VOLCANO.

Website located here: http://www.bungee.com/bzapp/volcano/index.html

I mean....
"So long, chief"

On May 12th, 2009, my good friend from high school, Matthew Geno Williams, passed away. I still don't yet know how it happened. I only found out through Facebook, and haven't gotten any responses to messages I've sent out.

We met freshman year, and began hanging out around then, along with another friend, Bradley, and Matt's best friend, Mychal. Pronounced Michael, of course. Halfway through the year, Mychal confessed he once had a dream that was Kirby, the pink, constantly hungry video game character. So we started calling him that.

The four of us usually hung out during lunch, off periods, and before and after school. Teachers actually took to calling us The Four Horseman. We were young and thought it was funny, so we accepted the name gladly. We assumed Matt was War, because he had a passion for firearms. Bradley was Pestilence, Kirby was Famine and I was Death. He also had a rather extensive collection of porn.

It startled me, because he was a big guy and could be abrasive, but he still maintained that he wouldn't want to fight me if I was angry. He played a trick on me once, giving me a video tape, but not telling me what was on it. It started with three girls, but about halfway through...let's just say a fourth actor showed up that I was not expecting at all.

He was a badass muthafucka that was there when you needed him and was always good for a laugh. We hadn't talked often since graduation, but I'll miss the bastard. The same way I still miss Luke, Rose and Orlando from that time in my life.

Rest in Peace, Matt. You left too soon, but I'm still gonna make fun of you. That's what Death always did.

When I was first learning, before I had my permit.

Did the one person who hurt you the most in your life apologize?
Not really, no. C'est la vie.

What are you wearing?
A gray T-shirt and pajama pants.

Have you ever kissed someone whose name started with a S?
Only once. It was on the cheek, then she moved to North Carolina.

Have any tattoo's/piercing's?
2 piercings and 1 tattoo. I'd like a bit more ink, though.

When is the last time you saw your number one & what did you do?
Obviously this started as a Myspace survey. I have changed the rules! Haha!

Honestly, if you could go back 1 month and change something would you?
Nah. Trying to change the past never ends well.

How has this week been?
Up, down, sideways and slantways. Like a Wonka-vator.

Have you ever fallen asleep in somebody elses arms?
Mmhmm, a few times.

When was the last time you talked to your number 2?
The rules have changed! Let go of your addiction to Myspace, Survey! It's for the best!

Is it okay for guys to wear pink?
My Technical Writing teacher in high school used to wear pink shirts. His name was Mr. Payne. So I know it can done, but it will never be done by me.

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper?
Waaay back in 2001.

Do you cry and throw a fit until you get your own way?
No. Pfft.

How many windows are open on your computer?
There are 7 windows open. My screen resolution is 2048 by 1536, so I resize and organize to keep multiple things visible.

Single or taken?
That would be taken.

Do you like to cuddle?
Indeed, I do. A favorite activity.

How tall are you?
6'2"

Have you kissed someone whose name started with a: A,C,D,B,P,E,Z
Yeah.

Do you like hugs?
Absolutely.

Are you high?
No. Completely sober.

What's your current problem?
Unemployment and the little matter of 1056 miles.

Are you afraid to fall in love?
I was in the past. Not anymore. Definitely not anymore.

Do you like anyone?
I like quite a few people. Do you like ambiguous questions?

Last thing you bought?
A 20oz Pepsi, because I craved one and thought I'd indulge.

Did you go outside for more than 30 minutes today?
I did earlier when I walked the dog. Does that mean I win?

"I just wanna ask you some questions"

A question was posed to me by my friend Deborah just a few minutes ago.

"Do you think it's always wrong for the government to torture people?"

According to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, torture is defined as "any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him, or a third person, information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in, or incidental to, lawful sanctions."

I suppose that covers a general and slightly ambiguous umbrella for the definition of torture. It doesn't, however, indicate what actually qualifies as torture. It states the causing of severe mental or physical pain. But what about inhibition reducing drugs? Does, perhaps, the usage of sodium thiopental qualify as torture? It's actually a general use anesthetic, which, at the proper dosage, can be used to lower a person's inhibitions while keeping them conscious and able to answer questions.

As for my answer, I'm not in favor of causing physical or psychological pain in the pursuit of knowledge, even if said knowledge could potentially save lives. The idea of one life being worth more than another is an ideological and ethical argument. Should one life be forfeit to save 10? Or 1000? Or 1,000,000? What is one life measured against the potential loss of half a population? And even if a life isn't forfeit, if a life is just damaged, does that make the action better?

I think that it's a far-too-slippery slope. If you torture one person to save ten, would that make it acceptable to torture 10 people to save 100? Where does the line get drawn? There are other avenues that may be taken to gain information. Not to mention that I believe torture is insufficient as a tool of interrogation. A person will say, and even BELIEVE, almost anything in order to stop or prevent physical pain.

So, technically yes, I don't think it's always wrong for a government to torture people. But because I think torture, in itself, is inherently incongruous. It doesn't work.

Any information received under duress is inherently suspect because we as a species still have a survival instinct.

"Into the FIRE!"

I stole this from my friend JC.

1. Name a movie that you have seen more than 10 times: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze. Or Batman Begins. Or The Dark Knight. Or Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Or any number of other entirely geeky movies.
2. Name a movie that you've seen multiple times in a theatre: Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
3. Name an actor that would make you more inclined to see a movie: To be honest, Johnny Depp. Recently, the man actually inhabits a character. It's impressive to watch.
4. Name an actor that would make you less likely to see a movie: Bruce Willis. Not a fan. Nope...not a fan.
5. Name a movie that you can quote from: Geez, take your pick. I've had entire conversations in nothing but movie quotes.
6. Name a movie musical that you know all the lyrics to all the songs: Moulin Rouge. SHUT UP.
7. Name a movie that you have been known to sing along with: The Music Man.
8. Name a movie that you would recommend everyone see: Kundun. It follows the life of the current Dalai Llama, from his discovery to his exile from Tibet.
9. Name a unusual movie that you own: Nilson's The Point. Never heard of it? Not suprised.
10. Name an actor that launched his/her entertainment career in another medium but who has surprised you with his/her acting chops: Again, I'd have to say Johnny Depp. From 21 Jump Street to Finding Neverland. That's quite a trip.
11. Have you ever seen a movie in a drive-in?: No, unfortunately.
12. Ever made out in a movie?: That and more. *wink wink nudge nudge*
13. Name a movie that you keep meaning to see but just haven't gotten around to it: Hell, I don't know. I've seen a lot of movies.
14. Ever walked out of a movie?: Just once.
15. Name a movie that made you cry: Wall-E
16. Popcorn?: Rarely. It pisses me off when kernel pieces get stuck in my teeth.
17. How often do you go to the movies?: Depends on what's out at the time.
18. What's the last movie you saw in the theater?: Frost/Nixon. I enjoyed it. Very interesting.
19. What is your favorite/preferred genre of movie?: Toss up. I like science fiction and a good drama equally. If I'm in the mood for a bad movie, I like horror.
20. What was the first movie you remember seeing in the theater?: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Now, wasn't that interesting?
